Balance and rhythm throughout a piece of art work can create emotion because it either makes the piece flow, or if it doesn’t have balance or rhythm it makes the piece feel somewhat awkward. Rhythm almost works hand in hand with balance. There has to be some sort of rhythm or pattern within a piece of art if the balance is vertical, horizontal, or vertical. There can’t just be one item if the piece has a balance. These are both very important in a piece of art because it makes it fit together, and makes it flow. It gives unity to the piece when things are in a pattern in a balanced environment.

When going to the student section of the tweed, I’ve always been impressed. At times, I find myself confused about how some of the art could be considered art. However, most of the time I feel inspired and love getting new ideas. Today, I really enjoyed the pieces that Jill Barle created. When I began to walk around I realized that her pieces had to do with war. They were very modernized and reminded me of something Andy Warhohl would do. The colors were similar and bright, and it looked much like pop art. As soon as I began looking around and looking closer at each piece, I began to read the titles. I soon realized that Jill seemed very almost sarcastic and harsh about war. I felt like through her art, I could see her views about politics, and war. My two favorite pieces of her work were titled, “Valet Parking” and “Fall Ready-to-Wear.” I thought both of these had very similar feelings. In “Valet Parking”, she had tanks set up in a row, and “Fall Ready-to-Wear,” was a bullet proof vest that would be worn in war. They both had a sort of a joking manner, and made war seem like it was a normal thing in days like these. Overall, I really liked her art. She did a very good job, and I thought it was a good choice as her final senior project.

This week we learned about unity. Unity can mean many different things but when I think of unity I just feel like when I look at something, whatever it is, it needs to just flow and fit together. A lot of art can “technically” be unity, however it doesn’t always look smooth and like it should fit together. There are many different techniques to help a piece of art have unity. Colors that compliment each other usually can have unity, however if they don’t look well together, the piece of art won’t look like it should work.

Within our work that we have done so far, I don’t feel like a lot of mine has unity. However, a lot of people’s within the classroom amongst my peers have definitely shown that it flows. I hope to soon do a project that has more unity. I hope if our class does a project on unity, that I will get and understand a greater meaning of unity, and that people will understand where my piece is coming from.

I’ve really started enjoying this class more and more, the more we get to work with different mediums and different techniques, and I hope we can use more in the future.

Creating space within a piece of artwork can contain line, shape, value, color and texture. In lecture we talked about how line can be used to create depth by using a vantage point. Putting a vantage point in a piece can make the piece look like there is something off into the distance, and that the picture never stops. Line doesn’t always have to use a vantage point, in fact a lot of the time, artists don’t use it at all. Lines can go whichever direction, and it can always create depth. Value is a major factor in creating space in a piece of work. Shading an object/shape darker or lighter creates layers, and gives is space and depth. Color can create space by using different shades of each other and putting colors that compliment each other next to each other in a piece of work. Lastly, texture is a major factor in creating space. By adding layers of paint, or layers of paper, or whatever medium that is being used, you can layer and add more to the piece and making it look like you have created space! The look and feel of space in a piece can be done by many of these different features.

When reading chapter one, the jist of the chapter is how to understand art, and how to really enjoy where and how it was created. As a member of an “audience,” that the artist is trying to base their piece towards, you have to be able to understand where they are coming from, their ideas, and their feelings. Many artists use art to show their feelings, but a lot has to do with a well known story or something from history. As chapter one says, we don’t have to know exactly what the author is trying to get at, or what the big picture they want you to see is. We just have to appreciate it for what it is, and know that they put a lot of emotion and intellectual feelings into the piece.

Matt, I hope this really knocks your socks off. It’s how I see art, and how the book explains it!

With having two projects due, I am feeling overwhelmed with finding a way to describe myself in two very different ways. One way is through a collage of magazine clippings, and the other through a self portrait using pointilism. Describing myself through a number of different pictures, and object and colors was not as hard as beginning the project of my self portrait. I plan on using a solid color to do my pointilism self portrait project. When I look at myself I don’t think about all of the colors that I should be, and I don’t think my project should look that way. I don’t want my project to look common, I want it to describe myself. I’m not like anyone I know and I would like my piece to reflect that. I hope to use texture throughout my face, and hair when I paint myself. I think it would be neat to put a lot of texture where my hair is, and my eye lashes, and eyebrows. I have a lot of ideas, but I have not started the project yet. I don’t know where to begin! I hope that people can identify who I am in the piece.

Ever since I was small, I learned that colors have different feelings and emotions. Who knew that just a simple color to put out so much information. I go through my daily life, looking around and not realizing all of the different things that have color. Everyone’s clothes show what they enjoy and gives them their own personal uniqueness. I find that on days that I’m not feeling my best, I tend to wear neutrals like browns like blacks. Days that I want to stand out, or am just feeling better I wear brighter colors like red! I sometimes realize that I often wear my favorite colors, and put them together without realizing it. In chapter five I read that colors show feelings. Light colors like red and orange and yellow explain happy, or excited. Dark colors like purple, green, and blue show calmness, or sometimes sadness. I love how much such a simple thing can explain so much. My room at home was a deep red, and a brown. It made me really relaxed, and I always went in there just to sit around. My whole house is neutral tones, like tans and browns. I wish I could paint my dorm room

I’ve never realized how different it is to just look at art, and then to really look at art. To look at the lines, and the shapes, and think about what they mean to me. An artist could completely have a thought in their head when creating the art, but when I look at it, it could have a completely different meaning. On the other side, it’s hard to create art about the way I’m feeling. For this project, I am having a hard time drawing what I’m feeling when I hear the song of my choice. I picked “Right as Rain” by Adele. I choice this song because I figure literally that the lyrics would be simple to draw. When I realized it needed to be more of the beat, than the actual lyrics, I had a hard time decided where to even start. Right now I’m very happy with how I began my piece, and I hope it turns out the way I imagine it. I hope when people see my project, they will get the same feeling that I do when I hear the song. It’s very upbeat and can be very repeticious. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s project!

I was completely fascinated with the Tweed Museum. It was my third or forth time in there in my life, and I still love going in every single time. I love all of the different work, and how some even involves student work as their showcase. I went in about a week before we had the tour because my brother’s good friend had work in the student showcase. As I was looking at her art, I sat dazed… really confused as to how some of it was considered art. It finally hit me that art can be anything you really want it to be. Everything is creative, and everything is different and someone will always find the “art” in it.

My favorite part about the museum was the ceramics. I took Clay one and two which including hand making pottery, and the wheel. I fell in love with making pottery on the wheel, and I would really love to do it again. I love how artists use different glazes and how it can turn out so different by firing it. I found all of those pieces beautiful, and very interesting. The other parts I really enjoyed was the faculty exhibits, and the Andy Warhol section. I love learning about his work, and his art is so fascinating. Overall I think the tour of the tweed was a very educating experience.

Walking into class, I had no idea which piece of art I wanted to base my first project off of. When I got to class, I decided to create my version of VanGogh’s “Starry Night.” A lot of people seem to have the same ideas as I do, but I am still deciding to go for it. No one’s art will ever look alike. My idea was to change the colors of the background into reds and oranges instead of blues and greens. The technique will hopefully turn out similar. I’ve always been interested in this particular piece of art. I feel like it portrays a relaxing image, and it makes you question what and who the artist was trying to relate it to. I hope I can make my first project my own, and unique like VanGogh did. Yet, I still hope to keep the same look, and I hope it will reflect his famous piece of art. One of my favorite parts of his piece of work, is the moon in the right hand corner, and how the strokes of blue go around it. I decided to make that my own and change it to a sun, and put oranges and then red around it. I hope this first project turns out.
